Watch Out for Lizard Brain

Have you heard of lizard brain? This is also known as the reptilian brain and sometimes referred to as the old brain. Raw and perceived emotions, feelings, and survival instinct are all housed in this part of the brain. These are descriptions of the amygdala.

The amygdala is part of the limbic system that processes emotions. This most primal part of our brain cannot only help us navigate through life, but it can also skew our perceptions. The amygdala’s ability to process information in a nanosecond can result in inappropriate responses based on gut reactions and distorted emotions sometimes resulting in harsh words spoken to a coworker or loved-one. Be conscious of your amygdala, and allow it to help rather than hurt.

“The lizard brain is the reason you’re afraid, the reason you don’t do all the art you can, the reason you don’t ship when you can. The lizard brain is the source of the resistance.”-Seth Godin
